Since its humble inception in 1888, in the rural farming community of Monroe, NC, Belk has grown into the nation’s largest, privately-owned mainline department store company, with more than 300 fashion stores across 16 Southern states, and a thriving eCommerce website at Belk.com. The company offers the best in Modern. Southern. Style., housing many of the nation’s top fashion designer and national brands of cosmetics, apparel, accessories, shoes and home furnishings, as well as outstanding lines of private brand merchandise, both online and in stores. Belk believes in giving back to the communities that made the company’s success possible, and therefore, strives to maintain a rich heritage of community service and philanthropy. Each year, the company contributes 2.5 percent of pre-tax profits to support charitable efforts in three major focus areas: education, breast cancer awareness and research, and community strengthening. In 2011, the Belk Charity Sale events raised more than $10 million for nonprofits throughout the south, and the inaugural Belk Bowl at Bank of America Stadium attracted 58,000 college football fans, gaining national media exposure for Belk and for the city of Charlotte.
